ChatGPT is a variant of the GPT (Generative Pre-training Transformer) which is a language model designed for generating human-like text in a conversational format created by the research company OpenAI. With ChatGPT, you can create intelligible and well-written subject matter in a wide range of styles, topics and languages. ChatGPT optimizes language models for dialogue by, in a sense, pre-guessing what customers may need. This is a huge step in the world of technology and has led to some rapidly increasing controversies regarding the power of technology and our very human roles within it.

Having a tool like ChatGPT at your disposal is causing many to worry that their jobs, such as working at a remote help desk, customer service, and others, may now be eliminated due to this new language model. Many customers and people in the world of tech have some concerns regarding eliminating the human touch, with one programmer stating “ChatGPT runs the risk of coloring human perspective the more we rely on AI technology to answer questions for us, instead of mentally reflecting on things for ourselves.”

As you may have seen trending on the internet, one of ChatGPT’s abilities include the ability to create songs with fine-tuned lyrics by simply typing in, “write a song in the style of XYZ.” While being able to readily change the creative landscape, the chat robot has also been gaining attention for the capacity to write fully formed essays and research articles. The ability to easily insert a few ideas and have a well written essay is an issue that is still being worked out, as many teachers are finding it difficult to navigate how to ensure that their students writing is their own.

Controversies aside, one of the most promising functionalities of ChatGPT is to write and debug code, which has the potential to revolutionize the technology space. Microsoft’s president, Brad Smith explained, “We’re going to see the advances in 2023 that people two years ago would have expected in 2033. It’s going to be extremely important not just for Microsoft’s future, but for everyone’s future.”

With all the hype and potential surrounding ChatGPT, there are several new conversations taking place on where technology will lead us next, what new ways of thinking and teaching do we need to keep up, and just what new and wonderous discoveries we will find as our technology advances even further from here.
